My #latinxheritage ~ risk, courage, heart ♥️
My dad immigrated from Iquitos, Peru in 1976 with not a lot in his pockets, without documentation and not knowing any English. Without a job, without a place to stay. He was a Peruvian Navy medic and on one of his many trips to the Houston port, he just didn’t go back home.
A Mexican friend (familia García) let him rent a room while he figured out his life. He took odd jobs and English classes at a local high school. He met a Puerto Rican girl who offered to marry him to fix his papers. He laughed at the proposal and said no, but she insisted. That’s how he became a US citizen. In fact, he had to remember to call her many years later to ask for a divorce so he could marry my mom 🤣
My dad worked a blue collar job at the City of Houston for nearly 35 years and successfully retired almost 10 years ago. He built a beautiful life in Houston and served countless Houston families (rich and poor) whose houses got into water piping trouble. In this picture, he’s holding me in his arms in front of the house he bought with my mom, so proud because he won the “yard of the month” award ☺️
I am so fucking proud to have the dad that I have. He taught me to lead with my heart, always be kind to others, take risks, and let my hard work and integrity speak for themselves.
On this #latinxheritagemonth, I honor my papi and the countless other Papi’s who taught us to never stop dreaming and to never lose our shot.

Want to know why your “why” matters when achieving a new goal? Because motivation inevitably runs out after the initial dopamine hit of starting something new, and eventually we either rely on habit or discipline. Spoiler alert: habits are way more effective.
I recommend having a LONG list of “why”’s for your goal because they may all resonate at different times for different reasons. When you’re tired or will power is running low, that original reason why may not cut it.
Your “why” for changing careers can start with your why NOT this career: Why and how is this NOT working? Why are you unhappy? What is the root cause of your lack of fulfillment?
Doing this work early will get you SO MUCH CLOSER to a career that makes sense for you. Not doing this work could land you in a next role that still hasn’t addressed your career pain point back to square 1….don’t do that…🙅🏽♀️

Raise your hand if you’ve ever over-identified with your job / career and taken it a little too far…. 😳
We are so much more than the labor that we perform in exchange for money, rewards, personal fulfillment etc.
Sure, it’s a significant % of our life time & energy so it’s worth choosing something that is meaningful to you… but we don’t need to get caught up in basing our self worth in what we do.
When we give our job/career that power, what happens when the inevitable mistake, setback or failure happens at work? We make it mean something detrimental about ourselves. What if that is just a total thought error? What if your self worth is not related at all? How does your energy shift?
