Do you keep telling yourself that you “should” start working on your job search, only to end up spending hours on TikTok, Netflix or literally anything else? In this episode, Priscilla explains how to use the “Think-Feel-Act” cycle to interrupt this damaging pattern.
Seek pleasure, avoid pain, and be energy-efficient: these are the top 3 human motivations that have helped us survive as a species. But it screws you when you’re going after big goals.
On today’s episode, I explain why it is that you procrastinate on a macro-level: it’s how we evolved as a species. I explain how our brain is split up into the “animal” brain, also called the “lower brain”, and the “adult” brain, also called the “higher brain” or pre-frontal cortex. These are essentially the toddler and adult inside your brain that are always fighting about whether or not you should do the thing you told yourself you would do….
I also explain the “think-feel-act” cycle, and how your thoughts influence your feelings which then influence your actions (or inactions). The first step to changing your procrastination habit is understanding the thoughts and feelings you are experiencing on a daily basis. You need to figure out your special reason for procrastinating, and it comes down to evaluating your “thought-feeling” combos. For some people it’s dread, for others it’s fear, and sometimes it can be rebellion. I explain how to do this in this episode, and even share my own GMAT story and how that process took ONE YEAR of my life, when it could have been just a few more months.
Procrastination is a normal obstacle in your career change journey, but it must be addressed because it WILL kill your entire dream. If you don’t have the right mindset and energy going into this process, you will resist the process at every turn, avoid doing the work, and not get any closer to your dream. So tune in, take some notes, and be courageous!
