Episode 79: I Love The 70’s, 80s, and 90s, Job Search Edition

Episode 79: I Love The 70’s, 80s, and 90s, Job Search Edition

After you listen to this episode, you’ll be glad you weren’t job searching in the 1970’s, 80’s or 90s!

Can you imagine faxing in your resume? Or, printing out 100 copies of your resume only to mail them out to different companies?

Well, that’s exactly what people used to do back in the day.
Do you remember when vh1 used to have those decade nostalgia shows, “I Love the 80’s” and “I Love the 90’s”? They would recount and make fun of all of the pop-culture fads and major news from the entire decade, year by year.
I absolutely looooved this show. As a late 1980’s baby, I loved learning about Post-It notes, the Brat Pack, and Madonna.
Well, I decided to do a little internet sleuthing & researching, and make my own version, but make it Job Search related.
Yes, it’s a little corny but I wanted to do a fun episode for y’all!
I ended up learning some really interesting things like, did you know it was OK to light up a cigarette during an interview in the 70’s? Sure was.
No, but seriously, on this episode, I explain how we got to the modern day job search as we know it today and how some things seem to never change – with cyclical recessions, boom economies, and competitive job markets.
I share a little bit about how job interview fashion evolved over the years, and how BIPOC were impacted as well.
And of course, I talk about how the internet totally blew up the job search process, giving us both massive rejection heartache AND a massive opportunity – we just need to know how to use it!
Tune in and let me know what you think!

Episode 74: How I Got A FAANG/MAANG Job Offer, with Rosita Reyes

Episode 74: How I Got A FAANG/MAANG Job Offer, with Rosita Reyes

FAANG or MAANG jobs refer to getting a job offer from Facebook/Meta, Amazon, Apple, Netflix or Google. They are some of the most prestigious job offers out there!

Rome wasn’t built a day, and you won’t get a FAANG/MAANG job offer in a day or weeks, either.

On this episode, you’re going to hear from Rosita Reyes, and how she landed a huge FAANG/MAANG job offer by having a recruiter reach out to her on LinkedIn.
She couldn’t believe it was a real person. She thought it was a phishing exercise.
But no, it was real. A Meta recruiter had seen her profile, her certifications, work experiences, and decided she’d be the perfect fit for her open role.
This opportunity didn’t just land in Rosita’s lap.
Rosita’s hard work in crafting her career story and up-skilling herself to be ready for a big opportunity paid off.
She worked for it, through small actions, day in and day out, year in and year out.
She stayed ready.
By now, you probably know that I talk a lot about the Compound Effect.
The idea that small steps lead us to the biggest results in our lives.
We don’t climb huge mountains overnight or build massive walls in one day.
Amazing results are made up of tiny decisions and steps. And the path is never linear. There are losses and wins along the way.
Whenever I get frustrated with the slow pace of change, my husband lovingly reminds me of my own advice, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”
And, I truly do believe that. Any program that guarantees you any incredible result, seemingly over-night or even “within 6 weeks” is not trustworthy.

Have you heard of “FAANG/MAANG” jobs? They stand for Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix & Google. When Facebook re-branded as “Meta” we got MAANG. Basically, these are the top big tech companies that people want to work for the most – often due to their competitive salaries, benefits, and perks.  On today’s episode, you’ll hear how Rosita Reyes got a recruiter note via her LinkedIn inbox, inviting her to consider a new role at Meta.

Episode 73: My Journey To Columbia Law As a First-Gen Dominican Black Woman

Episode 73: My Journey To Columbia Law As a First-Gen Dominican Black Woman

Have you ever NOT applied to prestigious jobs or schools because you thought you weren’t qualified? Have you written yourself off before even trying? Us, too.

Shoot your shot. Apply to jobs and schools that you don’t think you can get into. You’re probably wrong.

Today you get to meet one of my besties: Carol Guerrero.
Carol is a first-gen, Dominican-American mujer from Massachusetts. She went to Columbia Law school, and we were roommates in Miami when we did Teach for America together.
I’ve always looked up to Carol, despite being two years younger than me.
Similar to me, she didn’t get a blueprint for success handed down to her.
She had to figure it out by herself. And she’s been incredibly successful.
I love her so much that I asked her to marry my husband and I (and she did!)
I asked her to come on my podcast to share her own lessons learned and journey as she went through her first year of teaching and went on the grueling journey to apply to a top law school.
Even if you’re not interested in the law, her story offers us so many gems that you can apply to your own, big audacious goal.

Episode 72: Why Applying To Jobs Online Doesn’t Work

Episode 72: Why Applying To Jobs Online Doesn’t Work

We all hate waiting in long lines. So why in the world would you apply to jobs online for your career change? Applying to jobs online is the same thing as joining a long line that’s going nowhere fast.

Only apply to jobs online AFTER you get referred to that company or establish a connection with someone who works there.

Have you ever wanted to get into a certain restaurant or club, only to find that there’s an absurdly long line?
Begrudgingly, you get in line, and 30 minutes later, you’re still there.
In the same spot. No closer to yummy food or grooves.
We’ve all been there.
Well, here’s a job search truth bomb…
Applying to jobs online is like joining a very long line that isn’t moving.
Most people just wait in line.
They apply to as many jobs as possible, and then wait around. Crickets.
“Applying to jobs online” is a strategy that only works about 5% of the time.
And yet, 92% of the general population does this.
They fail to realize that, since recruiters are overwhelmed with a tsunami of digital apps on a daily basis, most of their applications will never be read or seen.
The night will end before getting into the club.
What you want to do instead, is finesse your way to the front of the line. Through relationships, people who you know, people who can say “aye, she’s with me”, and help you cut the line.
Those are called referrals, and you get them through networking & informational chats.
On today’s episode, I explain why this is the case, and how you can circumvent the long, long line.

72. Why Applying To Jobs Online Is NOT A Job Search Strategy

One of the biggest mistakes that I see job-seekers make is applying to as many online job postings as possible. This is a serious mistake, that can cost you a lot of wasted time, energy, and emotions.  I guarantee that most of those applications will never even be reviewed or seen.

Episode 70: Do You Know Why You’re Unhappy With Your Career?

Episode 70: Do You Know Why You’re Unhappy With Your Career?

My most successful clients understand their career pain source & level. This knowledge is a major clue to your next career move, and now you can know, too.

No point in changing careers if your career pain isn’t high enough.

I’m not great about going to the doctor.
I hate going. I find that it’s a huge hassle.
I mean, sure, I’ll go on my annual exams. But, if I have an issue with something else, I try to wait as long as possible before going to the doctor. (I know, I’m stubborn).
Last May, I started to struggle with plantar fasciitis in my right foot. I didn’t schedule an appointment with a podiatrist until September. LOL.
By the time I rolled up to the doctor, it was because the pain of my foot was GREATER THAN the pain of driving to the doctor, paying for parking, and waiting for God-knows-how-long to be seen.
My clients are no different.
They only come to me when they’ve been in pain for some time.
I mean, who actually WANTS to go on a career change process?
Watching Netflix, meeting friends for a beer, or going on a hike, all sound like way better ways to spend your time, right?
I get it.
But, pain is a great catalyst for transformation.
This is why, on the consult call, I ask questions to understand my client’s pain level.
I ask about different areas of their career and life: the people, the work itself, compensation & benefits, growth opportunities, work-life balance, relationships & community, joy, and impact.
I get clear on the problem and pain level. I let you know your problem, if I can help you, and how I can help you.
My most successful clients understand their pain and where it comes from, and now you can too.
On today’s episode, I share a tool/exercise that I use with my clients to help them get clear on their pain level.
If you want to get clear on your pain & if it warrants a whole career change, this is the episode for you.
HERE is the link to the Career Audit tool.

70. Do You Know Why You’re Unhappy With Your Career?

When clients come to me, they’re ready to figure out their next career move. They want to start firing out job applications ASAP. But many times, I’ll tell them to hold their horses. We first need to understand WHY they want to make a big career move in the first place.

Episode 69: How I Chose My Top 3 Career Non-Negotiables

Episode 69: How I Chose My Top 3 Career Non-Negotiables

The Paradox of Choice is why you need to exercise discipline and choose your Top 3 Career Non-Negotiables for your next career move. It’s a game changer.

A Career Lesson from Milk & Tinder

Think about the last time you visited the milk aisle.
Did you notice the never-ending & growing number of OPTIONS?
There’s soy, almond, oat, 2%, low-fat, non-fat, skim, organic, lactose-free, and so on.
The average consumer makes their choice, but is often left wondering, “Did I make the right decision? Is there a better milk out there for me?”
In the 1950’s, there was one type of milk available, and people didn’t second-guess their decision. In fact, they were pretty damn happy with their milk.
This same concept applies in modern dating, with apps like Tinder.
In Aziz Anzari’s book “Modern Romance” (great book if you haven’t checked it out), he talks about how a 1932 sociological study that took place in Philly found that 1 in 3 married couples were people who had grown up within a 5-block radius.
Dating was simpler back then. There was a de-facto constraint in your dating pool. People had fewer options, and made decisions more quickly and with more confidence.
In today’s dating world, you have the entire world’s dating pool at your fingers. And yet, people are saying they’re more unhappy than ever with their dating lives.
Shouldn’t we be happier in today’s modern world, since we have so many more options?
Unfortunately, our brains aren’t wired that way. Welcome to the Paradox of Choice.
This concept was coined by American psychologist Barry Schwartz, who published a book by the same title.
The Paradox of Choice refers to the idea that having an abundance of options actually requires more effort to make a decision and can leave us feeling unsatisfied with our choice.
He discovered that there is a fine line between having the freedom to choose what you want and being paralyzed in the face of too many options.
This same concept applies to the career exploration stage, as you decide what you will do next.
To help you reduce the sense of overwhelm and confusion, I introduce to you the Top 3 Career Non-Negotiables.
On this episode, I share what a career non-negotiable is (and isn’t), and how I chose mine when I transitioned into consulting from the education non-profit (they were geography, compensation and work-balance related).
If you want to feel less overwhelmed during your career change journey, this is the episode for you.
